GRADE 10 SCHOOL SELECTION GUIDE – 2025Subjects in Senior School (Grades 10–12)

  • Core Subjects (4):
    1. English
    2. Kiswahili / Kenyan Sign Language (KSL)
    3. Community Service Learning
    4. Physical Education
  • Elective Subjects (3):
    • Chosen from the learner’s selected career pathway

Selection of Pathways and Senior Schools

Available Pathways:

  1. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
  2. Social Sciences
  3. Creative Arts and Sports Science

School Selection (Total of 12 Schools):

  • 4 schools from the 1st subject combination choice
  • 4 schools from the 2nd subject combination choice
  • 4 schools from the 3rd subject combination choice
    = Total 12 Schools

Based on Accommodation:

  • 9 Boarding Schools
    • 3 from learner’s home county
    • 6 from outside the home county
  • 3 Day Schools
    • All within learner’s sub-county

Placement of Learners in Grade 10

Placement will be based on:

  1. Learner’s Choice
    • Pathway, Subject Combinations, Schools
  2. Merit
    • Grade 9 national assessments
  3. Psychometric Tests
    • Aptitude, interest & talent by KNEC and school
  4. Equity
    • Fair regional distribution
  5. School Capacity
    • Availability of space and resources

Priority Placement:

  • Top 6 learners per gender in STEM per sub-county → boarding school of choice
  • Top 3 learners per gender in Social Sciences → boarding school of choice
  • Top 2 learners per gender in Arts & Sports Science → boarding school of choice
  • Learners with Achievement Levels 7 or 8 → boarding school placement

Admission and Replacement Process

  • Placement results will be accessed online using learner’s Assessment Number
  • All schools (public & private) will admit Grade 10 through KEMIS only
  • Physical reporting must happen before a learner is entered into KEMIS
  • Daily attendance reporting will be done through KEMIS

Replacements:

  • Requests made through junior school head at least 2 weeks before reporting date
  • Priority given to learners who had initially selected the requested school
  • Once approved, new joining instructions will be accessed online
  • Replacements are one-time and irreversible

Roles and Responsibilities

Officers responsible for Grade 10 selection and placement include:

  • Cabinet Secretary (Education)
  • Principal Secretary (Basic Education)
  • Director General of Education
  • Heads of Directorates
  • Regional, County, Sub-County Education Officers
  • Principals of Senior Schools
  • Heads of Junior Schools

They are to cooperate and ensure a smooth, fair, and credible transition process.

How to Log In:

  1. Go to the portal link
  2. Click Login (on mobile, use 3-bar menu)
  3. Enter Junior School NEMIS UIC and password
  4. Use 54321 as verification code (during piloting only)

Update Learner Profile:

  • Indicate special needs (if any)
  • Provide parent/guardian info
  • Update learner location
  • Submit and confirm

Selecting Learner’s Pathway & Schools

  1. Select 1 pathway per learner (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science)
  2. Choose 3 subject combinations under that pathway
  3. For each combination, select 4 schools from different clusters (Total = 12)

After completion, download or print the learner profile.

Note: This process is NOT done on NEMIS. Use the separate portal provided.
