TSC Intern Recruitment of 20,000 Teachers Set for October 2024

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to recruit 20,000 teachers on internship terms in October 2024. Originally scheduled for July, the recruitment has been postponed due to budget constraints.

Background: TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, addressing the National Assembly Education Committee, disclosed that severe budget cuts from the Treasury have impacted the Commission’s operations, including teacher recruitment. The recurrent TSC budget has been reduced by Ksh.10.28 billion, affecting various programs.

Details of the Recruitment:

  • Total Positions: 20,000 (18,000 junior school teachers and 2,000 primary school teachers)
  • Reason for Delay: Budget cuts
  • New Recruitment Date: October 2024

Budget Adjustments: The TSC’s gross recurrent budget for the 2024–2025 Financial Year Supplementary Estimates I is Ksh.347.49 billion, down from Ksh.357.77 billion.

Affected Programs:

  • July salary increment for teachers from the 2021–2025 CBA
  • Training of teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)

Teacher Internship Programme: This one-year program aims to equip and sustain the competencies of new teachers through mentorship, coaching, and practical teaching experience. The program targets unemployed registered teachers who will be assigned to learning institutions.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Primary School Interns: Must hold a PTE or DPTE certificate and be registered with TSC.
  • Junior School Interns: Must have at least a Diploma and a C+ in KCSE, with a C+ in two teaching subjects, and be registered with TSC.

Documents Required for Verification:

  • A copy of the Teacher Registration Certificate/print-out from the TSC online portal
  • A copy of the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) card (if applicable)
  • A copy of the National Identity Card (ID) or Passport
  • Two (2) color passport size photographs
  • A copy of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card
  • A copy of the Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification Number (KRA PIN)

Stipends:

  • Primary School Interns: Ksh.15,000 per month
  • Junior School Interns: Ksh.20,000 per month

Upon successful completion of the Internship Programme, teacher interns will be awarded an internship certificate.
