TSC to Post 24,000 Intern Teachers to Junior Schools
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that 24,000 intern teachers will be deployed to junior schools in January 2026.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed the plan during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations held at Moi International Sports Centre, Nairobi, on October 6, 2025.
Major Recruitment Milestone
Ogamba said the latest recruitment will push the number of teachers hired in the last three years to 100,000.
“Seventy-six thousand teachers have already been employed, and 24,000 more will be in class by January 2026,” he noted.
The CS confirmed that another 16,000 teachers will be hired later in the year as the government works to bridge the persistent teacher shortage.
Recruitment and Training
TSC will begin the document verification exercise in December, after which successful applicants will sign internship contracts before deployment.
To support Competency-Based Education (CBE), the government has set aside Ksh 950 million for teacher retooling programs. So far, over 300,000 teachers have been trained, with the final cohort scheduled for December 2025.
TSC Chair Dr. Jamleck Muturi added that the entire recruitment process has been digitized for efficiency and transparency.
“Registration is now automated and recruitment fully online. By January, 24,000 teachers will be in class,” he said.
Promotion and Capacity Building
Muturi also revealed that 151,612 teachers have been promoted so far. Promotion interviews for additional slots are set to begin on Monday.
The CS praised Kenyan teachers for their resilience and sacrifice, describing them as “true nation builders” who are central to education reforms.
Internship Details
The 24,000 interns will serve under a one-year contract from January 1 to December 31, 2026.
TSC has emphasized that priority will go to teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), followed by Technical subjects, then Languages.
Here’s how applicants will be scored:
- Science teachers (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics) – 65 marks
- Math + Non-Science combinations – 55 marks
- Technical/Creative Arts subjects (e.g., Computer Studies, Home Science, Business, Music, Art & Design, Woodwork, Aviation, PE) – 40 marks
- Languages (English, Kiswahili, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, etc.) – 25 marks
- Arts/Social Sciences (History, CRE, Geography, IRE, HRE, Life Skills) – 5 marks
This scoresheet has sparked protests from Arts teachers, who argue that the system is discriminatory. However, TSC has insisted that the country faces a serious shortage of science teachers, and recruitment priorities will reflect that.
