The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to hire 20,000 teachers as interns in October this year. This recruitment drive will support the ongoing Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) initiative. Of the new hires, 18,000 positions are allocated for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), while 2,000 will be for Primary Schools (P1).

Key Highlights:

  • 56,000 teachers have already been recruited to support CBC.
  • 18,000 classrooms are being constructed to accommodate Grade 9 students by January next year, with 11,000 classrooms funded by development partners and 7,000 classrooms constructed through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
  • The government is working to ensure a smooth transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 by 2026.
  • By January 2025, 46,000 intern teachers will be confirmed as permanent and pensionable employees. The government has set aside Ksh 18.7 billion for this confirmation process.

Teacher Internship Program Overview

The Teacher Internship Program is a one-year initiative designed to give unemployed registered teachers practical teaching experience and mentorship. It prepares them for future recruitment into permanent roles.

  • Contract Extension: TSC has extended the contracts of 18,000 junior secondary and 2,000 primary school interns, whose contracts were set to expire on August 31, 2024, by an additional four months.

Qualifications for Primary School (P1) Internships

  • Must hold a PTE or DPTE certificate.
  • Must be registered with the TSC.

Qualifications for Junior Secondary School (JSS) Internships

  • Must have at least a Diploma in Education.
  • Must have scored at least a C+ in KCSE, with C+ grades in two teaching subjects.
  • Must be registered with the TSC.

Application Process

  • Applications for the internship program are to be made online through the TSC portal.
  • Required documents for verification include:
    • Teacher Registration Certificate.
    • National ID or Passport.
    • National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) card (if applicable).
    • Passport-size photos.
    • NHIF card.
    • KRA PIN.

Internship Salary

  • Primary school interns will earn Ksh 15,000 per month.
  • Junior secondary school interns will receive Ksh 20,000 per month.

Upon completing the internship, teachers will receive a certificate, which enhances their chances of being considered for permanent positions in future recruitment drives. The certificate serves as a key asset during the confirmation to permanent roles.
