33 Teachers Removed from TSC Register Through Gazette Notice
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced on Friday the revocation of appointments for 33 teachers nationwide. This decision was documented in Gazette Notice number 9587, published on August 2, and signed by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia. The revocations followed disciplinary hearings conducted for the teachers involved.
Reasons for Deregistration
The notice referenced Section 30 (2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act, Chapter 212 of the laws of Kenya, stating that the individuals named in the attached schedule had been removed from the Register of Teachers as per Section 30 (1) (e) of the Act. The TSC Act Section 30 outlines several reasons a teacher might be removed from the register, including:
- Disciplinary proceedings
- Obtaining registration through fraudulent means
- Conviction of a sexual offence
- Conviction of a criminal offence
- Physical or mental illness rendering the teacher incapable of performing duties
Once a teacher’s name is deregistered, they can only be reinstated by the Commission’s direction. A teacher removed from the register must cease teaching immediately and is prohibited from engaging in the teaching service thereafter.
Penalties for Misrepresentation
The notice also highlighted Section 44 (b) of the TSC Act, which states that anyone falsely or fraudulently presenting themselves as a registered teacher commits an offence. Such individuals, upon conviction, are liable to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand shillings or imprisonment for up to twelve months, or both.
Recent Trends in Teacher Deregistration
Earlier this year, in April, the Commission deregistered 65 teachers as a disciplinary measure without specifying the infractions. Similarly, in 2023, 73 teachers were dismissed for disciplinary issues, with their names and details published in a Gazette Notice. However, the Commission did not disclose the specific charges against these teachers.
These ongoing disciplinary actions reflect TSC’s commitment to upholding the standards and integrity of the teaching profession in Kenya.
