TSC Recruitment: 24,000 JSS Internship Applications Closing Soon, Document Verification to Start

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is about to close its online application exercise for 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) internship jobs. The application deadline is Tuesday, 9th September 2025, at midnight.

This recruitment aims to reduce the ongoing teacher shortage in Grades 7, 8, and 9. After the deadline, applicants will be invited via SMS for the document verification exercise.

TSC Internship Application Timeline

TSC activated its online recruitment portal on 24th August 2025, giving teachers two weeks to apply. The internship program will run for one year, offering teachers valuable experience under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Priority in Recruitment

According to the TSC scoresheet, priority will go to teachers specializing in:

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects.
  • Technical subjects such as Computer Studies, Business Studies, Drawing and Design, and Home Science.
  • Language subjects like English, Kiswahili, French, German, Arabic, and Mandarin.

The scores awarded are as follows:

  • Science combinations: 65 marks.
  • Mathematics with non-science subjects: 55 marks.
  • Technical or Creative Arts subjects: 40 marks.
  • Language combinations: 25 marks.
  • Arts and Humanities (e.g., History, CRE, Geography, IRE): 5 marks.

This scoring system has triggered protests from Art teachers, who argue that it unfairly disadvantages them compared to Science and Technical subject teachers.

Why Science Teachers Get Priority

TSC has consistently emphasized the shortage of science teachers across the country. Former CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia admitted before the National Assembly Education Committee that although Kenya has over 400,000 unemployed teachers, very few apply for science positions—especially Physics.

She explained:

“Despite the high number of unemployed teachers, many schools remain understaffed in science subjects. We rarely get applications in Physics and other sciences.”

This crisis has forced the Commission to give more marks and opportunities to Science and Technical teachers.

Document Verification Requirements

During the verification exercise, applicants must present:

  1. A copy of the TSC registration certificate (or printout from the online portal).
  2. A copy of the NCPWD card (if applicable).
  3. A valid National ID card or passport.
  4. Two recent passport-size photos.
  5. A copy of KRA PIN certificate.

Only candidates who meet these requirements will move forward to signing a one-year internship agreement.

Internship Terms and Stipend

  • The internship runs for 12 months.
  • Interns will receive a stipend of Kshs. 20,000 per month, subject to statutory deductions such as NSSF, SHIF, and Housing Levy.
  • At the end of the program, interns will receive a certificate of completion.
  • Teachers who have served as interns before will automatically receive 50 marks in future permanent and pensionable (PnP) recruitments, giving them an advantage.

Application Guidelines

Applicants must:

  • Be Kenyan citizens.
  • Hold at least a Diploma in Education with a KCSE mean grade of C+ and C+ in two teaching subjects.
  • Be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
  • Be unemployed with no record of dismissal from teaching service.
  • Have Personal Accident Insurance cover.

All applications must be submitted online through www.tsc.go.ke or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke. Manual applications will not be considered.

Caution Against Fraud

TSC has warned applicants that the recruitment process is free of charge. Any fraudulent activities should be reported immediately to TSC offices, police stations, or through:

The Teacher Internship Programme is designed to help unemployed teachers gain hands-on classroom experience through mentorship, coaching, and practical exposure. While the program is not permanent, it provides a stepping stone to long-term employment with TSC.

Applications close on 9th September 2025 at midnight. Submit your application today to avoid last-minute hitches.
