TSC- Qualifications for Secondary School Teachers in Kenya

Teaching is one of the most prominent professions in Kenya, with over 300,000 teachers according to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The TSC, an independent commission established under the Constitution of Kenya, manages human resources within the education sector.

Kenyan teachers are categorized into three groups: Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Primary Education Teaching, and Secondary Education (Diploma and Degree holders). Each group has distinct responsibilities and required qualifications. This article focuses on the qualifications required for secondary school teachers in 2024.

General Qualifications for Secondary School Teachers

  • Diploma in Education:
    • Minimum grade of C+ in KCSE
    • C+ in the two subjects of specialization
    • At least C plain in English
    • C plain in Mathematics for science-based courses
    • D+ in Mathematics for non-science-based courses
  • Diploma in Education for Visually and Hearing Impaired:
    • Minimum grade of C plain in KCSE
    • At least C- in English
    • C- in Mathematics for science-based courses
    • D plain in Mathematics for non-science-based courses
  • Bachelor of Education:
    • Minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE or its equivalent
    • C+ in two subjects of specialization
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (for those interested in teaching):
    • Minimum grade of C+ in KCSE
    • C+ in the two subjects of specialization
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE):
    • For degree holders wishing to transition into teaching roles, a minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE is required, although some degree holders may have grades below this threshold.

Despite the qualifications and requirements set by TSC, budget constraints and policy changes sometimes hinder the recruitment of degree-holding teachers for secondary school roles. This ensures that only those who meet the rigorous standards set by the TSC can enter the profession, maintaining high teaching standards in Kenya’s secondary schools.
