TSC Provides Updates on Teacher Promotion Interviews 2025.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has provided updates regarding the ongoing promotion interviews for teachers across different educational institutions, including secondary schools and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs). These promotions are aimed at elevating qualified teachers to higher job groups and administrative positions within the education sector.

Completion of Primary School Teachers’ Promotion Interviews

The promotion interviews for primary school teachers commenced on January 13, 2025, and were successfully completed by January 23, 2025. The TSC had announced a total of 25,288 promotion slots for both primary and post-primary school teachers. This recruitment drive received an overwhelming response from teachers eager for career progression.

Advertisement and Allocation of Promotion Slots

TSC initially announced 5,690 promotion openings for school administrators in four different advertisements (Ads 1 to 4) that ran from November 12 to November 18, 2024. Subsequently, on December 17, 2024, the Commission advertised an additional 19,943 promotion slots for teachers in job groups C1 to D3, with applications being submitted online.

Of the total 25,288 positions:

  • 16,109 slots were allocated to primary schools.
  • 9,179 positions were assigned to post-primary institutions, including secondary schools and TTCs.

Massive Application for Promotion

Similar to previous years, the promotion process attracted a large number of applicants. According to TSC, approximately 189,000 teachers applied for the advertised positions. After shortlisting, 96,640 primary school teachers and 44,043 post-primary school teachers were invited for interviews.

Changes in the Promotion Interview Process

Unlike previous years, this year’s interviews were more focused on document verification rather than extensive questioning by interview panels. The panels, composed of Sub-County Directors, Human Resource Officers, and Curriculum Support Officers, primarily assessed applicants based on their qualifications and required documentation.

Teachers were required to present essential documents, including:

  • National identification cards (IDs)
  • Academic certificates
  • Professional credentials

Promotion Criteria and Scoresheet

The evaluation process for promotions was guided by a structured scoresheet. Several factors influenced the awarding of marks, including age, academic qualifications, length of service, and the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) rating.

1. Age-Based Scoring

Older teachers were awarded higher marks:

  • 55+ years – 30 Marks
  • 50-54 years – 26 Marks
  • 45-49 years – 22 Marks
  • 40-44 years – 18 Marks
  • 30-39 years – 14 Marks

2. Academic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree – 5 Marks
  • Bachelor’s Degree – 3 Marks
  • Diploma – 1 Mark
  • KNEC Examiner Experience – 4 Marks

3. Length of Stay in Current Grade

  • 7 years and above – 50 Marks
  • 6 years – 40 Marks
  • 5 years – 30 Marks
  • 4 years – 20 Marks
  • 3 years – 10 Marks

4. TPAD Rating (Performance Assessment)

  • 81+ score – 10 Marks
  • 61-80 score – 8 Marks
  • 41-60 score – 6 Marks
  • 21-40 score – 4 Marks
  • 1-20 score – 2 Marks

5. Presentation Skills

  • 1 Mark

Outcome of the Interviews

Teachers who successfully pass the promotion process will receive official communication from TSC. They will be issued promotion letters and subsequently posted to schools where there are vacancies.

Unsuccessful candidates will receive regret letters but are encouraged to apply for future promotion opportunities.

Funding for Teacher Promotions

The government has allocated Ksh 1 billion for teacher promotions this year. This funding will facilitate the seamless implementation of the promotions and ensure qualified teachers are placed in appropriate positions.

Important Considerations for Promotion Interviews

The required documents for promotion interviews vary depending on the position applied for. Classroom teachers typically need fewer documents compared to individuals seeking administrative roles such as head teachers and school principals.

Teachers are advised to ensure they have all necessary paperwork in order and to keep an eye on official TSC announcements for further updates on promotions and placements.
