TSC !!! Nancy Macharia EXITS as Evaleen Mitei Confirmed. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially announced the retirement of Dr. Nancy Macharia, who has served as the Commission’s Secretary and CEO since 2015. Dr. Macharia began her terminal leave on June 1, 2025, and is set to retire fully on June 30, 2025, bringing to a close a decade of transformational leadership in Kenya’s education sector.
Dr. Nancy Macharia’s Legacy: A Decade of Transformation
Over her two terms, Dr. Macharia spearheaded major reforms that modernized TSC operations and strengthened the teaching profession in Kenya. Key highlights of her tenure include:
Streamlined Teacher Recruitment
- Introduced merit-based recruitment and placement to close staffing gaps effectively and transparently.
Continuous Professional Development
- Expanded CPD programs and enhanced teacher appraisal systems, promoting accountability and lifelong learning.
Transparent Promotions
- Reformed the promotion framework, ensuring fairness and meritocracy in teacher career progression.
Digital Service Delivery
- Digitized TSC services such as teacher registration, payroll, and data systems, improving efficiency and accessibility.
Improved Teacher Welfare & Industrial Harmony
- Advocated for better working conditions, implemented fair discipline mechanisms, and helped eliminate frequent teacher strikes, ensuring consistent learning for students.
Dr. Macharia is widely credited with restoring professionalism, efficiency, and trust within the education system.
Evaleen Mitei Appointed Acting TSC CEO
With Dr. Macharia’s departure, the Commission has appointed Ms. Evaleen Mitei as the Acting Secretary and CEO, effective June 1, 2025. Ms. Mitei brings a wealth of experience, having joined the teaching service in 1994 and risen to the rank of Director of Teacher Discipline Management.
Dr. Macharia expressed full confidence in her successor, urging TSC staff to support Ms. Mitei during this transition:
“The Commission has appointed Evaleen Mitei to act as Secretary/CEO pending the appointment of my successor,” she noted, encouraging all staff to offer their full cooperation.
Farewell Message from Dr. Nancy Macharia
In her farewell note, Dr. Macharia wrote:
“It has been a true honour to lead such a dedicated and talented team. I am proud of what we have accomplished together.”
She encouraged the TSC team to uphold high standards, safeguard the Commission’s values, and stay committed to improving education in Kenya. As she begins her retirement, Dr. Macharia wished her colleagues success and expressed confidence in the strong foundation laid during her tenure.
