The Hiring Of 20,000 Intern Postponed Until October 2024 by TSC.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to recruit 20,000 teachers on internship terms in October this year. Originally scheduled for July, the recruitment exercise was postponed due to budget constraints.

Budget Constraints and Rescheduling

Appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia disclosed that severe budget cuts from the Treasury have impacted the Commission’s operations, including the hiring of teachers. Dr. Macharia announced that 18,000 junior and 2,000 primary school intern teachers will now be recruited in October. She noted that the recurrent TSC budget has been reduced by Sh10.28 billion, affecting various programs.

Financial Year Supplementary Estimates

In its presentation of the 2024–2025 Financial Year Supplementary Estimates, TSC highlighted that the new gross recurrent budget stands at Sh347.49 billion, down from the initial allocation of Sh357.77 billion. The budget cuts will also affect other programs, including the July salary increment for teachers under the 2021–2025 CBA and the training of teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Teacher Internship Programme

The Teacher Internship Programme is a one-year initiative aimed at equipping and sustaining the competencies of individuals entering the teaching profession. This program targets unemployed registered teachers, assigning them to learning institutions to enhance their teaching experience through mentorship, coaching, and practical teaching exposure.

  • Primary School Interns: Must hold a PTE or DPTE certificate and be registered with TSC.
  • Junior School Interns: Must have at least a Diploma and a C+ in KCSE, with a C+ in two teaching subjects. They must also be registered with TSC.

Stipend and Certification

Interns attached to primary schools will receive a monthly stipend of Sh15,000, while those in junior schools will earn Sh20,000. Upon successful completion of the Internship Programme, interns will be awarded an internship certificate.

This initiative aims to address the staffing needs in schools while providing practical teaching experience to new educators.
