Schools Set for Half-Term Break on June 24 as Ball Games Hit Full Swing

Schools Set for Half-Term Break on June 24 as Ball Games Hit Full Swing, Public and private schools across Kenya are preparing for their second-term mid-term break, with most secondary schools expected to release students on Tuesday, 24th June 2025. According to the Ministry of Education calendar, all schools officially begin their half-term on Wednesday, 25th June, and will resume classes on Monday, 30th June 2025.

For nursery, primary, and junior schools, the break will begin slightly later, early next week.

Half-Term Break Dates:

  • Break Starts: Tuesday, 24th June 2025
  • Official Half-Term: Wednesday, 25th June 2025
  • School Resumes: Monday, 30th June 2025

Term Two Ball Games in Full Gear

As students prepare for their break, school ball games are intensifying across the country. Inter-school and inter-cluster matches are already underway in primary and junior schools. These competitions are being held under the umbrella of the newly established Kenya Primary and Junior Schools Sports Association (KPJSSA), formed after junior schools were incorporated into the former KPSSA.

Ball Games by Level & Age Category:

Primary Schools (Under 12 Years)

  • Soccer – Boys/Girls
  • Volleyball – Boys/Girls
  • Netball – Boys/Girls
  • Handball – Boys/Girls

Junior Schools (Under 15 Years)

  • Soccer – Boys/Girls
  • Volleyball – Boys/Girls
  • Netball – Boys/Girls
  • Handball – Boys/Girls
  • Basketball 3×3 – Boys/Girls

Sports Rules & Guidelines:

✔ Equipment Standards:

  • Volleyball Net Height (U12 & U15): 2.24 meters
  • Netball Post Height: 3.05 meters
  • Handball Ball Sizes: Size 4 (U12), Size 5 (U15)

✔ Team Composition:

  • Primary Composite Teams: 75% from winning team, 25% from others
  • Penalty-Decided Wins: 50% from winner, 25% from 2nd place, 25% from others

✔ Foreign Player Rules:

  • Handball/Netball/Volleyball: Max 3 foreigners; 2 may play
  • Soccer: Max 5 foreigners; 3 may play
  • Basketball 3×3: Max 2 foreigners; 1 may play

A Legacy of Inclusivity

The half-term break for primary schools was introduced in 2018 by former Education CS Amina Mohammed, recognizing the need for younger learners to rest just like their older counterparts.

With ball games underway and schools gearing up for mid-term, learners across Kenya are set to enjoy a vibrant mix of rest, play, and healthy competition this June.
