Ministry of Education Releases Full List of Grade 10 Subject Combinations and Career Pathways Ahead of June 30 Deadline, The Ministry of Education has officially unveiled the comprehensive list of subject combinations for Grade 10 learners transitioning to Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This vital release comes ahead of the June 30, 2025 deadline, giving learners, parents, and schools clear direction on career pathway selection.

Over 1.2 Million Learners to Join Senior School Under CBC

According to Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Jwan, more than 1.2 million Grade 9 learners will become the first CBC cohort to join Senior School. These students will be required to choose a career pathway from five available options, each tailored to learner strengths, interests, and future careers.

CBC Career Pathways for Grade 10 Learners

The subject combinations have been organized into five broad curriculum tracks:

  1. STEM – Applied Sciences
  2. STEM – Pure Sciences
  3. STEM – Technical Studies
  4. Arts and Sports
  5. Social Sciences

Each pathway features compulsory and optional subjects, with core subjects like English, Mathematics, Kiswahili, and Community Service Learning remaining mandatory.

Full List of Subject Combinations Per Career Pathway

1. Arts and Sports Pathway

  • Fine Arts, Theatre & Film
  • Music & Dance, Fine Arts
  • Theatre & Film, Music & Dance

Optional Subjects:
Arabic, Biology, Business Studies, Computer Studies, CRE/IRE/HRE, Fash̄i ya Kiswahili, French, Geography, German, General Science, History & Citizenship, English Literature, Mandarin, Advanced Mathematics, Sports & Recreation, Media Technology.

2. Social Sciences Pathway

Focus Areas: Business Studies, History & Citizenship

  • CRE/IRE/HRE, Business Studies
  • CRE/IRE/HRE, Geography
  • History & Citizenship, Geography
  • Arabic, French
  • Fasihi ya Kiswahili, Sign Language
  • English Language, English Literature

Optional Subjects:
Business Studies, Computer Studies, General Science, German, Advanced Mathematics, Geography, Media Technology.

3. STEM – Applied Sciences Pathway

  • Agriculture, Business Studies
  • Agriculture, Computer Studies

Aviation, Biology, Chemistry, Electricity, Physics, Metal Work, Building Construction, Marine & Fisheries, Woodwork.

4. STEM – Pure Sciences Pathway

Optional Subjects:
Agriculture, Building Construction, Business Studies, Marine & Fisheries, Metal Work, Power Mechanics, Home Science.

5. STEM – Technical Studies Pathway

  • Electricity, General Science

Optional Subjects:
Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Marine & Fisheries, Media Technology, Woodwork, Advanced Mathematics.

SENIOR SCHOOL DECLARATIONS

Schools must log in to the Ministry’s official selection platform at https://selection.education.go.ke to:

  • Declare their Grade 10 capacity.
  • Select at least two career pathways, with STEM being mandatory.
  • Ensure each subject combination has at least 15 students.

Rejection of combinations must be approved by the Sub-County Director of Education, and schools may resubmit corrected proposals.

PATHWAY SELECTION BY JUNIOR SCHOOLS

Junior school heads will assist learners by:

  • Accessing the national Grade 9 list.
  • Updating learner profiles.
  • Guiding on pathway and subject choices.
  • Choosing 12 senior schools per learner (4 for each preferred cluster).

Important Notes:

  • Each learner must select 7 subjects in Senior School.
  • 4 schools for first-choice pathway, 4 for second-choice, 4 for third-choice.
  • At least 3 of the 12 schools must be from the home county, and 6 must be boarding schools.

Learners with special needs will follow a customized subject selection process through special or integrated institutions.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE AND ASSESSMENT

Senior School learning will focus on:

  • 7 subjects per learner, with Math, English, Kiswahili, and Community Service as compulsory.
  • Final assessments will be based on academic performance in Grades 7, 8, and 9, with the final national summative assessment scheduled for November 2025.

This rollout marks a major milestone in Kenya’s education reform agenda. The Ministry of Education has called on all stakeholders—parents, teachers, school heads, and education officers—to fully support the process before the June 30 deadline to ensure a smooth transition for all learners.
