Making KCSE papers more unique, KNEC aims to lower cheating.

In a significant move to curb cheating, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will personalize the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam papers. Each paper will now include the candidate’s name, index number, and school. This shift is designed to prevent exam malpractice, particularly impersonation, which has been a persistent concern.

KNEC CEO David Njengere explained that by personalizing the papers, it will be easier to identify cheaters, targeting individual accountability rather than punishing entire schools or exam centers. Previously, impersonation and other forms of misconduct led to widespread penalties, but now, offenders can be isolated more effectively. Additionally, this new measure will prevent unregistered candidates from sitting for exams, as no extra question papers will be provided.

The personalization will include tearing off the section containing the candidate’s details before marking, ensuring that examiners cannot identify specific candidates during the marking process.

Key Changes and Impact

  1. No More Extra Papers: KNEC will no longer provide additional question papers for any candidate. This measure is designed to stop the photocopying of papers, a practice that has been linked to cheating in the past.
  2. Limited Flexibility for Private Candidates: Private candidates, who previously sat for exams at sub-county centers, will now take their theory papers at county headquarters. This centralization aims to tighten control over the examination process and prevent unauthorized access to the papers.
  3. Daily Collection of Exam Papers: To further minimize opportunities for early access and cheating, KNEC introduced twice-daily collection of exam papers in 2023. Morning and afternoon papers will be packaged in separate cartons, with afternoon session papers remaining sealed until the appropriate time.

Increased Security Measures

To improve security at exam collection centers, KNEC has added 41 more storage containers, which will double the capacity for exam collection. This is part of broader efforts to prevent early exposure to examination materials.

Exam Schedules

  • KCSE: October 22 – November 22, 2024
  • Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA): October 28 – November 20, 2024
  • Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA): October 28 – October 31, 2024

The number of candidates taking the KCSE exam has increased by 6.89%, with 965,501 students enrolled compared to 903,264 in 2023. Similarly, KPSEA candidates have grown by 2.38%, with 1,313,913 students enrolled, up from 1,283,339 in the previous year.

In total, 2,279,397 candidates will sit for their respective assessments across Kenya in 2024, with personalized exam papers expected to enhance the integrity of the national examination process. This initiative represents KNEC’s commitment to ensuring fairness and eliminating exam malpractice.
