KNEC Issues a Warning About False TVET and KCSE Grade Upgrades.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has alerted the public about an emerging scam in which fraudsters claim they can alter Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) grades for a fee. This fraudulent activity is primarily conducted online, targeting desperate students and parents looking for academic qualification improvements.

Fraudulent Activities Targeting KCSE and TVET Graduates

The deception mainly involves misleading social media posts that falsely advertise grade modification services. These fraudsters claim that individuals who sat for KCSE between 2000 and 2024 can have their results upgraded, thereby increasing their chances of securing university admission. In addition to KCSE candidates, TVET graduates from 2010 to 2024 are also being lured into the scam with promises of certificate modifications.

Investigations revealed that some of these misleading posts are linked to fake social media accounts impersonating KNEC, even using the council’s official logo. The scammers deceive the public into believing they have access to KNEC’s official database, allowing them to modify examination results.

KNEC’s Official Position on Examination Results

KNEC has firmly dismissed these claims, reaffirming that KCSE results cannot be changed under any circumstances. The council clarified that result slips are dispatched to Sub-County Directors of Education, who then oversee their collection by school heads. After results are released, the official KCSE certificates take approximately eight months to be processed and distributed.

KNEC further warned that any attempt to tamper with official academic records is illegal and could lead to serious consequences, including legal action. The council urged the public to be cautious and report any suspicious activities involving result alterations.

Mid-Year KCSE Exams Facing Legal Setbacks

In a separate development, the Ministry of Education has been working to introduce mid-year KCSE exams, which are expected to be conducted every July until 2027. However, a court ruling in Kisii temporarily halted the initiative after a legal case was filed questioning its legitimacy. The ruling suspended the registration process and postponed practical examinations that were initially set to begin in January.

Despite the legal hurdles, the government remains determined to implement the mid-year exams. Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba assured students and parents that the Ministry of Education is preparing an appeal to challenge the court’s decision, allowing the program to proceed as planned.

Conclusion

With fraudsters increasingly targeting students through fake grade-upgrading schemes, KNEC urges the public to stay vigilant and avoid falling prey to such scams. The council maintains that academic integrity is non-negotiable, and anyone attempting to alter their results through illegal means will face serious repercussions.
