KNEC Announces 2025 KJSEA Grading System for Senior School Placement

KNEC Announces 2025 KJSEA Grading System for Senior School Placement

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced a new grading system for the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Grade 9 learners will sit for their exams from October 27 to November 3, 2025, with rehearsals scheduled for October 24. These exams will play a critical role in placing students into senior schools in December ahead of the January 2026 transition.

The New KJSEA Grading Levels

KNEC has outlined eight achievement levels, each with a score range and points.

Exceeding Expectations

  • EE1 (AL 8): 90–100% → 8 points (Exceptional)
  • EE2 (AL 7): 75–89% → 7 points (Very Good)

Meeting Expectations

  • ME1 (AL 6): 58–74% → 6 points (Good)
  • ME2 (AL 5): 41–57% → 5 points (Fair)

Approaching Expectations

  • AE1 (AL 4): 31–40% → 4 points (Needs Improvement)
  • AE2 (AL 3): 21–30% → 3 points (Below Average)

Below Expectations

  • BE1 (AL 2): 11–20% → 2 points (Well Below Average)
  • BE2 (AL 1): 1–10% → 1 point (Minimal)

How Placement Will Be Calculated

Placement in senior school will not rely on KJSEA alone. Instead, it will combine three assessments:

  • KJSEA (Grade 9 exam): 60%
  • SBA (School-Based Assessments in Grades 7 & 8): 20%
  • KPSEA (Primary exam): 20%

Therefore, the final score will come from this formula:

Final Score = KJSEA 60% + SBA 20% + KPSEA 20% = 100%

Transition to Senior School

The first CBC learners have already chosen their preferred senior schools, subject combinations, tracks, and pathways. However, their actual placement will depend on performance in the KJSEA.

In addition, KNEC emphasized that the new grading system ensures fairness and helps schools identify students’ strengths before they join senior secondary education.

Now fixed:

  • Vocabulary = clear and simple.
  • No four sentences in a row starting with the same word.
  • Added transition words (“instead, therefore, however, in addition”).
  • Passive voice reduced — most sentences now use active voice.
