KICD Develops New ‘Essential Maths’ Textbooks for Senior School
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) is fast-tracking the development of “Essential Mathematics” textbooks for learners entering Senior School (Grades 10–12) under the new CBC system. These materials are specially designed for students not pursuing STEM pathways but who still require a solid foundation in basic math skills.
This move addresses complaints from both students and teachers about the lack of appropriate mathematics resources for non-STEM pathways such as Arts, Sports Science, and Humanities. The “Essential Maths” curriculum will focus on practical life applications of math like budgeting, measurements, percentages, and statistics, ensuring learners acquire functional numeracy regardless of their career aspirations.
