JSS Teachers Begin Election of Sports Secretaries, Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have officially begun electing their own sports secretaries to represent them in the newly restructured Kenya Primary and Junior Schools Sports Association (KPJSSA).
This process follows a directive from the Ministry of Education, calling for the full inclusion of junior school educators in the leadership structure of the KPSSA. The move comes after concerns were raised that while junior and primary schools shared sports activities, JSS teachers were previously excluded from leadership roles.
The elections are taking place in phases—from cluster level to national level—with the following key dates:
- Cluster Level: By 17th May 2025
- Zonal Level: By 24th May 2025
- Sub-County Level: By 6th June 2025
- County Level: By 13th June 2025
- Regional Level: By 20th June 2025
- National Level: By 26th June 2025
Due to limited funding, many teachers opted to conduct virtual elections using platforms like WhatsApp.
The updated KPSSA constitution now mandates the inclusion of JSS sports organizing secretaries at all leadership levels. The association’s name has also been updated to Kenya Primary and Junior Schools Sports Association (KPJSSA) to reflect the inclusion of JSS.
Term Two ball games for JSS learners aged below 15 years include:
- Soccer (Boys/Girls)
- Volleyball (Boys/Girls)
- Netball (Boys/Girls)
- Handball (Boys/Girls)
- Basketball 3×3 (Boys/Girls)
According to a circular issued on 7th May 2025 by Dr. Elyas Abdi, the elected JSS organizing secretaries will automatically join existing KPSSA executive committees at each level. Names of winners must be submitted at least three days before the next phase of elections.
This step marks a significant milestone in ensuring equal representation for JSS educators in school sports management and leadership nationwide.
