High School STEM Teachers to Undergo CBC Training Ahead of Grade 10 Rollout
High School STEM Teachers to Undergo CBC Training Ahead of Grade 10 Rollout, As Kenya prepares for the rollout of Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system in January 2026, the Ministry of Education, through CEMASTEA (Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa), is set to retool thousands of high school STEM teachers.
The targeted training will focus on educators teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Home Science, and Technical subjects.
August Training for Teachers
CEMASTEA has scheduled the first round of training for August 2025, with the initial list of teachers already submitted by school principals through an online platform. The data submission deadline was June 23, 2025, to allow for adequate preparation for the upcoming training.
According to a circular from CEMASTEA CEO Jacinta Akatsa, the training aims to build the capacity of STEM teachers in senior school to deliver effectively under the new curriculum model.
“This will go a long way in realizing the Ministry’s goal of having at least 60% of learners pursuing STEM education,” noted Akatsa.
Senior School Transition Underway
Currently, Grade 9 learners are in the process of selecting their senior schools, pathways, and subject combinations. The exercise, which began on June 9, will close on June 30. Learners are expected to choose:
- One learning pathway, with STEM being compulsory.
- Twelve senior schools of choice:
- 9 boarding schools (3 from their home county, 6 from outside)
- 3 day schools
In senior school (Grades 10–12), learners will study seven subjects:
- 4 core subjects: English, Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language (KSL), Community Service Learning, and Physical Education.
- 3 pathway subjects based on selected career tracks.
CBC Progress and Challenges
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), introduced in 2019, was piloted in 2017 and nationally rolled out in 2018. Despite notable progress, implementation is still grappling with serious teacher shortages.
Speaking to the Senate National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia revealed that:
- There is a shortfall of 26,039 teachers in senior secondary schools.
- An estimated KES 70 billion is required to recruit 98,461 teachers for both junior and senior secondary levels.
So far, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has:
- Recruited 68,313 JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
- Retrained 229,292 primary school teachers on CBC (April 2019 – September 2021).
- Trained 60,642 JSS teachers between May and November 2024.
- Ongoing training for 20,000 JSS intern teachers in collaboration with CEMASTEA and TSC.
