Government Releases Ksh. 22 Billion in Capitation Funds for Schools
After a prolonged delay, the National Treasury has finally disbursed Ksh. 22 billion in capitation funds for public primary, junior secondary (JSS), and secondary schools for the second term of 2025.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Education on May 20, 2025, Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed the release and detailed how the funds would be allocated across various education levels.
According to the Ministry, the funds have been distributed as follows:
- Free Primary Education: Ksh. 1,370,196,484.55
- Free Day Junior School Education: Ksh. 8,900,424,491.35
- Junior School Special Needs Education: Ksh. 118,417,921.35
- Free Day Secondary Education: Ksh. 11,639,872,094.40
- Total Disbursement: Ksh. 22,028,911,191.40
The Ministry emphasized that the release of these funds is essential for ensuring the smooth running of learning activities in all public basic education institutions during the second term.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing free and compulsory basic education as enshrined in Article 53(1)(b) of the Kenyan Constitution, the Ministry cautioned school administrators against misusing the funds or introducing unauthorized fees.
