Geography and Business Studies Lead in Grade 9 Subject Preferences – Ministry Reveals Least Selected Options, The Ministry of Education has announced that Geography and Business Studies are the most preferred subjects among Grade 9 students transitioning to Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
According to Dr. William Sugut, Director of Secondary Education, data collected from the ongoing subject selection exercise shows that while Geography and Business Studies dominate choices, technical subjects such as Woodwork, Metalwork, and Electricity attracted the least interest.
This exercise is part of the CBC structure, which guides learners to select subjects within five key pathways: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), Social Sciences, Arts, Sports, and Technical Education. Dr. Sugut noted that schools will offer subject combinations based on their infrastructure and staffing capacity.
He further explained that students are encouraged to choose subjects aligned with their interests and career paths. “We are not assigning combinations. Students should begin by selecting a learning pathway, then choose subjects from the available options within that pathway,” said Dr. Sugut.
So far, over 9,165 junior secondary schools have successfully submitted their subject combinations. However, more than 1,360 schools lack the required facilities to offer hands-on technical subjects. The Ministry is still addressing these gaps to ensure all students have access to quality education options.
Schools have been instructed to work closely with sub-county education officers to update subject combinations before the placement deadline. The Ministry emphasized the importance of guiding learners to make informed choices.
