Following Teachers To Be Deployed By TSC
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to address teacher shortages by deploying primary school teachers to special and junior secondary schools across Kenya. This initiative is primarily a response to staffing challenges caused by the introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which led to the removal of Class 7 and 8.
Deployment of Teachers by TSC:
- Deployment to Special Schools and Units:
- A total of 3,600 teachers will be deployed to special schools and units across the country by the end of the month.
- The focus is on teachers with Diplomas and Degrees in Special Needs Education (SNE).
- This phased deployment is part of an effort to address the shortage of 5,362 teachers in special needs schools.
- TSC already hired and deployed 1,763 teachers to special schools in May 2024, with more sets of deployments scheduled for January and June 2025.
- Teachers with SNE qualifications will be posted to primary school special schools and units in line with their areas of specialization.
- Deployment to Junior Secondary Schools:
- To meet the growing demand, TSC is targeting to deploy over 20,000 PTE teachers with various Diplomas and Degrees related to education to junior secondary schools.
- The junior secondary school section requires a total of 70,000 teachers to handle Grades 7, 8, and 9.
- Teacher Grades and Promotions:
- Teachers at grades B5 and C1 with a bachelor’s degree will be promoted to grade C2.
- Teachers at grade C2 with a bachelor’s degree and promoted on or before March 26, 2021, will be moved to grade C3.
- Teachers at grade C1 with a diploma certificate and promoted before March 2021 will be promoted to grade C2.
- Teachers at grade C1 with a diploma but without three years of service will only receive deployment letters but no promotion to the next grade.
- Data Collection for Deployment:
- TSC has collected information from Heads of Institutions (HOI), including qualifications such as:
- B.Ed. Arts
- B.Ed. Primary Option
- B.Ed. Science
- B.Ed. ECDE
- B.Ed. SNE
- Diplomas in education, SNE, and ECDE
- The data includes KCSE mean grades and specializations to ensure proper deployment of teachers.
- TSC has collected information from Heads of Institutions (HOI), including qualifications such as:
- Lowered Requirements for Junior School Teachers:
- TSC has lowered the qualifications for deployment to junior secondary schools, now accepting teachers with degrees in Primary Option, ECDE, and SNE.
- Initially, only teachers with degrees in secondary options and a KCSE mean grade of C+ in their two teaching subjects were eligible.
This effort to deploy and promote teachers reflects TSC’s commitment to balancing staffing needs in both special and junior secondary schools while ensuring that educational standards remain high.
