Following Teachers’ qualifications pay employed by TSC in October.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to hire 20,000 intern teachers starting in October of this year, as part of its ongoing efforts to support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Out of these, 18,000 will be recruited for junior secondary schools and 2,000 for primary schools.
Key Highlights:
- Hiring Teachers for CBC: TSC has already hired 56,000 teachers to support the Competency-Based Assessment (CBC) and plans to hire an additional 20,000 to further strengthen the system. The aim is to ensure a smooth transition and learning experience for students, particularly as they move from Grade 9 to Grade 10 in 2026.
- Classroom Infrastructure:
- The government, with support from partners, plans to construct 18,000 classrooms by January next year to accommodate Grade 9 students.
- Of these, 7,000 classrooms are being built through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), while 11,000 classrooms are being supported by development partners.
- Permanent and Pensionable Terms:
- TSC will confirm 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms in January 2025, with Ksh 18.7 billion allocated for this exercise. The conversion to permanent terms is crucial for ensuring job security for the interns.
- Interns will be issued internship certificates at the end of their contracts, which will help them earn more marks in recruitment interviews, increasing their chances for future employment.
- Stipend for Interns:
- Interns in primary schools will receive a stipend of Ksh 15,000 per month, while those in junior secondary schools will earn Ksh 20,000 monthly.
Interview Requirements:
To be considered for the internship positions, applicants will need to present the following documents during interviews or verification:
- A copy of the Teacher Registration Certificate or print-out from the TSC online portal as proof of teacher registration.
- A copy of the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) card (if applicable).
- A copy of the National Identity Card (ID) or Passport.
- Two (2) color passport-size photographs.
- A copy of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card.
- A copy of the Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification Number (KRA PIN).
With these initiatives, TSC and the Ministry of Education continue to show their commitment to improving education standards, ensuring teachers are adequately compensated and trained, and setting up the necessary infrastructure for CBC’s success.
