Feedback on the Grade 10 By Schools on CBC extended by KICD.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has announced an extension for education stakeholders to submit their views on the Grade 10 Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) designs. Initially set for July 31, the deadline has now been moved to August 31, allowing stakeholders more time to provide valuable feedback on this critical phase of the CBC.

In July, the Ministry of Education, through KICD, called upon all education stakeholders, particularly secondary school principals and teachers, to review the Grade 10 CBC designs and share their insights. The review process is crucial as it will influence the final structure and content of the curriculum, ensuring it meets the educational needs and goals of the country.

Areas for Feedback

Stakeholders are encouraged to evaluate and provide feedback on several key components of the Grade 10 curriculum design:

  1. Essence Statements: This involves assessing the core ideas and principles that underpin the curriculum. Stakeholders are asked to consider whether these foundational statements effectively capture the purpose and goals of the curriculum.
  2. Expected Learning Outcomes: Feedback is sought on the learning goals set for students, ensuring they are clear, achievable, and aligned with the overall educational objectives.
  3. Scope and Sequence of Topics: Stakeholders are invited to review the order and structure of topics and sub-topics to ensure a logical and progressive learning experience for students.
  4. Suggested Learning Experiences: This area focuses on the proposed learning activities and whether they are engaging, relevant, and capable of fostering the intended competencies.
  5. Assessment Methods: Suggestions are requested on how students should be evaluated, including the appropriateness of the assessment tools and methods proposed.
  6. Learning Materials: Feedback on the resources provided for learning is crucial, as these materials support the curriculum’s implementation and effectiveness.
  7. Extracurricular Activities: Recommendations on supplementary activities that support the curriculum are also welcomed, ensuring a holistic approach to education.

In addition to these areas, stakeholders are encouraged to provide any other relevant suggestions concerning the Grade 10 curriculum design and the broader implementation of the CBC at the senior school level.

Access to Curriculum Designs and Submission Process

The developed Grade 10 curriculum designs are accessible on the KICD website (www.kicd.ac.ke). Stakeholders can submit their comments and suggestions to the designated email addresses: Grade10feedback@kicd.ac.ke or info@kicd.ac.ke.

Background on CBC Implementation

Since its introduction in 2019, the CBC has gradually been implemented by the Ministry of Education. The first cohort, currently in Grade 8, is expected to advance to Grade 9 in 2025 and Grade 10 in 2026, marking their entry into senior school. The CBC was designed to replace the 8-4-4 system, which was criticized for its exam-centric approach and lack of preparation for real-life challenges and the job market.

The extension of the deadline underscores the Ministry’s commitment to a collaborative approach in refining the CBC, ensuring that it effectively meets the needs of Kenyan students.
