Education Ministry Moves to Address Teacher Unemployment Crisis – 62,000 Trained Graduates Targeted
The Ministry of Education has rolled out key reforms to reduce teacher unemployment by absorbing over 62,000 trained but jobless graduates into the public education sector.
In a statement released on 25th June 2025, Cabinet Secretary Julius Jwan announced that pre-service teacher training admissions will be restructured to better align with actual school workforce needs. This move aims to ensure that graduates are well-matched to job market demands and can be absorbed more effectively into teaching positions.
“We will review pre-service admissions to match them with real-time staffing needs. The ministry also plans to absorb 62,000 unemployed teachers,” said CS Jwan.
New Strategies to Align Supply With Demand
The Ministry also revealed several ongoing and future interventions:
- Rationalizing training programs to avoid oversupply of educators.
- Developing new employment tracking frameworks.
- Integrating market data into training and admissions criteria.
- Supporting regional recruitment to solve localized shortages.
Mass Employment Plan for 2025–2026
In the next financial year, the government plans to recruit 24,000 teachers, moving toward its goal of employing 100,000 teachers who have remained jobless over recent years. This is part of a broader national agenda to boost staffing in public schools and improve education quality.
Parliament Pushes TSC to Act on Teacher Backlog
These announcements follow pressure from the National Assembly’s Education Committee, which grilled the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over its slow recruitment process and underutilization of qualified teachers.
The committee directed TSC to collaborate with the Education Ministry and ensure fast-tracked hiring, especially for the 39,000 unemployed teachers aged above 45 years.
Forward Plan: Better Data, Faster Hiring, Enhanced Coordination
The Education Ministry and TSC will work together to:
- Digitize teacher tracking systems.
- Issue guidelines to training institutions on future enrollment targets.
- Allocate adequate budgetary support for mass recruitment.
