Vacancy Description

Background

The ecosystems of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) are vital for the food security, employment, and economic development of ten states in eastern and southern Africa: Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Madagascar, Comoros, Réunion, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Approximately 60 million people depend on this biodiversity hotspot for various resources such as fishing, tourism, oil, and gas. However, the region’s fragile coastal and marine ecosystems are under threat from population growth, increased consumption, pollution, and diverse human activities. Additionally, climate change exacerbates these issues through ocean warming, acidification, and more intense and variable weather events.

In 2019, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) tasked GIZ with implementing the Western Indian Ocean Governance Initiative (WIOGI) in collaboration with the Nairobi Convention, part of UNEP. The project aims to enhance cooperation among regional, national, and local actors for the protection and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the WIO. Its primary focus areas are:

  1. Strengthening local coastal communities’ capacity to participate in ocean governance.
  2. Enhancing the regional multi-actor stakeholder initiative (Our Blue Future) to promote inclusive and sustainable blue economy solutions.
  3. Improving local economic and social conditions for a sustainable blue economy in Mozambique and Tanzania.

The WIOGI project will expand significantly in 2024 with a funding increase from BMZ and potential EU co-financing, potentially extending the project budget by 15 times and its duration to 2029.

As WIOGI’s activities expand, the project seeks a Maritime Affairs Intern to support the design and implementation of critical processes and engagements within the maritime sector. This role is ideal for an organized, determined, and ambitious individual looking to build a career in ocean governance, blue economy, and maritime affairs.

The intern will work closely with the WIOGI Project Manager and collaborate with component leads and team members to support various internal and external project processes, stakeholder engagements, and events.
