Open Volunteer Positions

1. Volunteer Pharmaceutical Technician

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive, verify, and record all incoming items in the Hospital drug store.
  • Issue and record all items requested by the consumption units in the prescribed format.
  • Ensure proper filing and storage of all documents in the hospital drug store.
  • Monitor consumptions of items in the consumption units.
  • Ensure proper storage of all items in the Hospital drug store.
  • Regularly monitor expiry dates of all items.
  • Monitor underutilized and slow-moving items and advise prescribers/users accordingly.
  • Monitor stock levels and avoid unnecessary stock outs in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Record temperatures in the cold room and the fridge twice daily.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of the cold chain in the drug store.
  • Provide pharmaceutical advice when required.
  • Assist in preparing consumption reports.
  • Conduct regular physical inventory to ensure compliance with records.
  • Create picking slips.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Key Result Areas:

  • Accurate and timely documentation of all issues and received drugs and medical items.
  • Daily recording and tracking of temperatures in the cold room and the fridge.
  • Timely issuance of orders to various units in prescribed forms.
  • Proper storage of drugs and medical items.
  • Tracking of expiries and slow-moving items.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma in pharmacy from a recognized institution.
  • Enrollment by the pharmacy and poisons board.
  • At least three years of hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Good team player.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work ethically in a demanding environment.
  • Good customer care skills.

2. Volunteer Laboratory Technologist

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory investigations as per clinician’s request, ensuring accurate and timely results.
  • Maintain order and smooth flow of patients.
  • Participate in in-service training and regular refresher courses for staff.
  • Update and maintain relevant records.
  • Monitor and supervise the usage of laboratory reagents.
  • Maintain laboratory machines, ensuring they are cleaned and covered after use.
  • Ensure general laboratory cleanliness.
  • Report unusual statistics or observations to the laboratory in-charge.
  • Use Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.
  • Maintain safety procedures in the laboratory.
  • Prepare stains, reagents, and solutions for lab tests.
  • Participate in department planning and forecasting of laboratory supplies.
  • Organize biological samples for shipment.
  • Write and review SOPs.
  • Submit weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on time.
  • Stay updated with technical developments to save time and improve reliability.
  • Perform laboratory tests to produce reliable and precise data.

Human Resource:

  • Supervise laboratory incentive staff and ensure work is done properly.
  • Countercheck all work done by incentive staff.

Program Activities:

  • Ensure laboratory tests are performed accurately and timely.
  • Use revised SOPs in all testing procedures.
  • Ensure proper collection, packaging, and transportation of laboratory samples.
  • Ensure proper storage of laboratory reagents and cold chain system.

Reporting and Coordination:

  • Ensure all laboratory reports are done on time and sent to the supervisor.
  • Notify the supervisor of all investigations above the normal threshold.
  • Report any laboratory incidents to the senior lab technologist.

Key Result Areas:

  • Quality of lab services – reliable and timely.
  • Cleanliness and orderliness of the workplace.
  • FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) application in stock management.
  • Training of lab assistants and continuous medical education (CME).
  • Timely reporting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma in medical laboratory sciences.
  • Registration by KMLTTB.
  • 3 years of experience in clinical laboratories.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations.
  • Flexibility at work.
  • Cultural sensitivity.
  • Team player.
