After a year of service, TSC provides JSS intern teachers with confirmation.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has assured the recently recruited junior secondary school (JSS) teachers of confirmation to permanent and pensionable (pnp) terms after one year of service.

This was revealed by TSC officials during the induction exercise for the 20,000 JSS intern teachers who were recruited in November 2024.

The teachers, who were hired on a one-year internship term, reported to schools on 6th January 2025.

The Commission officials, which included TSC County and Sub County Directors, Human Resource Officers, and Curriculum Support Officers, asked the teachers to be devoted to their work as the Commission focuses on converting them to pnp.

The teachers were inducted on the TSC Code of Regulations and Ethics for Teachers, Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD), TSC leaves, among other staff policies, in their sub-county venues.

TSC already, in January, converted to pnp terms a total of 46,000 teachers who were first recruited on internship terms.

This is the largest conversion to ever happen to intern teachers, thanks to President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza government agenda, which now boasts of employing 56,000 teachers on pnp since their inception.

This conversion constituted the 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school teachers recruited in February 2023, 450 secondary school teachers recruited in April 2023, and 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school teachers recruited in September 2023.

The teachers’ terms of service changed in January after their confirmation to permanent terms.

Besides better salaries, the teachers are now entitled to a comprehensive medical cover, leaves, and loans, among other benefits.

A primary school teacher earns a net salary of Ksh 32,000 after statutory deductions, while a graduate secondary school teacher, including those in junior secondary in hardship zones, earns up to Ksh 47,526 in net pay.

Previously, the intern teachers attached to primary school used to earn Ksh 13,000 per month, while those in secondary received Ksh 17,000 after SHIF, NSSF, and House Levy deductions.

In pnp recruitment, the Commission awards 50 marks in its score sheet for teachers who have served TSC on internship terms, making their confirmation highly probable.

The 20,000 JSS teachers will also be retooled on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).

TSC will also pay the teachers’ stipends with arrears in February 2025 after school heads of institutions (HOI) bungled the online casualty submission process.

The Teacher Internship Programme is a one-year programme meant to equip and sustain the competencies of persons entering the teaching service.

The programme targets unemployed registered teachers to be assigned to learning institutions where their teaching experience will be enhanced through mentorship, coaching, and exposure to practical teaching experience.

The internship period will be for twelve months, though the majority of the 46,000 interned teachers served for two years.

On successful completion of the Internship Programme, teacher interns will be awarded a certificate.
